The Chinese recognize the year 2020 on their calendar as the “Year of the Rat.” In the United States, one could easily say the past several years have been the year of the woman. Female visibility is on an upward trajectory in areas once thought to be the sole province of men.

NEWS-VIEWS: STIGMA

Reshaping the conversation

A holiday dinner with family and friends always sparks insightful conversation at mealtime, but such discussions also reveal alarming truths. For example, despite the cornucopia of food embellishing the dining table, one may have found out that a loved one is afflicted with opioid use disorder. Such a discovery is not that uncommon, as our society is in the midst of an opioid epidemic.

AT THE LIBRARY

Heroic Dog Man celebrated

To start the new year with a bang, the Youth Services division of the Bethlehem Area Public Library threw a party for fans of Dog Man, a hugely popular series of graphic novels for children. About 50 kids and parents attended, the kids working enthusiastically to make hand puppets of Dog Man and his nemesis, Petey. They also created “flip books” featuring the hero and the villain. The activity room on the library’s second floor was jumping. Photo: Jayden Torres and Damian Mejia, both of Bethlehem, made puppets of the “good” guy, Dog Man, and the “bad” guy, Petey. Mischievous smiles suggest they may be on Petey’s side.

Residents in March for Life

Piling into buses, cars and trains, Lehigh Valley residents traveled to the 47th annual March for Life in Washington, D.C., to see President Trump make history. On Jan. 24, Trump became the first U.S. president to appear in person at the march.  Marchers waved pro-life signs, banners and flags during the rally on the National Mall as Trump told the crowd he was proud to stand with them in their fight to defend the right to life of unborn children.
