Hawks fall to Nazareth

A 21-point loss in the EPC wrestling championship Saturday night is not what Bethlehem Catholic faithful are used to. Nazareth’s 40-19 thumping over the Golden Hawks was the first league title for the Blue Eagles, as they head into this weekend’s District 11 3A tournament as the top seed. Who will finish as the district champion will be the million dollar question heading into Freedom Saturday night.

Reel classics

Often the popular music of our time becomes the masterpieces for people living 200 years or more in the future. Music that we perhaps might consider as entertainment now could become the core orchestral repertoire of the next century.

PEEPFEST-DAY 2

Room to run around

Every city has its own New Year’s traditions.  Here in Bethlehem, we have Peepsfest. As a mom, I appreciate the Peep drop celebration, especially because it takes place long before midnight.  We attended the Peepsfest Dec. 31, and the yellow Peep, hoisted before the Steelstacks, was a bright spot in the cloudy landscape.  Before the drop, we explored the children’s activities at ArtsQuest.  Photo: Gabrielle Holmes, of Reigelsville, shows off her cheerful balloon spider from Tootse and Friends

COVER STORY-CAST IRON TOYS AT NIHM

Once upon a time in Fullerton

Peter and Charlie Dent spoke about their family’s manufacturing legacy at the National Museum of Industrial History 602 E. Second St., Dec. 14. They described how their great-grandfather, Henry H. Dent, and his business partners founded the Dent Hardware Company in 1894.  The Fullerton-based business produced hardware for refrigerators and cold storage units in their brass and iron foundries, as well as other specialty items. Between 1898 and 1937, the company added cast iron toys to its product line. Photo: Brothers Peter and Charlie Dent with an exhibition of antique cast iron toys manufactured by their family’s namesake hardware business. Peace Pilgrimage marks 60th year

A tradition created over 60 years ago continued Dec. 14 as the Christmas Peace Pilgrimage made its way from Nazareth to Bethlehem. Each year the walk starts at Nazareth Moravian Church and finishes at Christ United Church of Christ, taking approximately six hours to complete.  Photo: Diane Buckly-Maidt and her husband, Dave Maidt, travel all the way from Maryland to participate in the peace walk each year. Diane has been walking since 1985, involving her husband 10 years later, and calling it their “Christmas tradition.”
